Hindhede Quarry

A little walk before dinner on Sunday. The Hindhede Quarry is where the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is. Just less than 10 minutes walk from the car park will bring you to the quarry. It is a lot less crowded here than it was in Dairy Farm, though there are loads of people squeezing in a walk up the Bukit Timah Hill just before dinner time. There is a wonderful looking playground along the way to the quarry, a nice place to bring the kids! We have bookmarked this playground already!

Dairy Farm

It has been a while since we went for a Sunday walk. It has been a while too since the last time I took out my canon350d. The walk was great, if not a little humid. It was a little breezy if not a little grey.
Carrying my camera now is not the same as before. With a protruding tummy, hanging the camera around my neck is rather uncomfortable, with the edge of the camera constantly pressing into my flesh. It used to hang nice and flat. So instead, I got to sling it on my arm. Now, that isn't the best way to carry it especially when there are some gentle undulating gravel covered slopes and I being unable to see my feet now and being so clumsy, I might just fall and HORROR! break my camera.
Whatever photo-taking skills I have, have been non-existent since I stop taking photos on a regular basis. I didn't take too much photos either since I was too hot and bothered. Took like maybe 20 odd shots.
We will be back to walk the other path of this nature walk. We got there at about 3pm, just before it got more crowded. I will hope that the skies will be a glorious blue the next time we visit.

Our National Pastime

See that long line of cars on the left? Wondering what those cars are doing?

But of course! They are queueing!

You see, we Singaporeans love to queue, even more so on National Day! I think Shell had a 44 cents discount on petrol, that explains the long long queues snaking outside almost every Shell petrol kiosk on National Day.

Ugliness

Someone please tell me this isn't architecture. Aren't these houses ugly? They are so ugly they pissed me off. They are new by the way, if you are thinking that these are built 20 years ago.

What was the person thinking when he designed these houses?

Don't we have enough sorry looking buildings in Singapore already?

The Night Festival

I decided that we should head down to the Night Fest since we didn't really have anything planned. It would be fun, and a good photo opp too. Not that the photos are that great anyway. Still, beat the horrid looking skies we had been having last week. There were some performances going on and the museums were open til 2am and the best thing is admission is free to all of them! Good news to me since I wanted to visit the Panton exhibit and also, I have been a little curious about the Peranakan Museum.

Tons of people at the Peranakan Museum, with artists giving free caricatures, some band singing and free candy floss. There were queues forming everywhere in the museum, waiting for their caricatures to be done and the candy floss machine must be overworked too, judging by the number of people waiting for their candy.

The grand finale was Loop of Fortune by a German act. Singaporeans are suckers for pyrotechnics, of course having fire works was a must have. I don't quite get what they were trying to express in this performance but I enjoyed the fireworks at the end of it. The National Museum looked sparkling good too! The Husband didn't think I was able to make it til 12 midnight! I did, somehow time passed really fast that day. I was tired at the end of it, but on our way back to the car, I remembered I hadn't been to the Wu Guan Zhong's exhibit at the SAM! Despite being pretty tired, I suggested we had a peek at the paintings.
Somehow I enjoyed the performance from last year's more. Boats, pianos, giant balls and dancers flying by the facade of the museum. I remember there was this other performance after the main one with a performer splashing around in a huge glass bowl filled with water. I thought she was amazing! Too bad, I ran out of batteries way before that.

Singapore Arts Festival

I am deciding if I should get down to Marina Barrage for the festival opening of the Singapore Arts Festival.

I remembered going last year and was so overwhelmed by the crowd. Can hardly see a thing, but good thing that there were fireworks after that. The closing act looks really good too. Actually all the outreach events look good. Maybe for once, I shall not be lazy and take the effort to attend them all.

Wind

Did anyone else noticed?

Last night at about 11pm, there were sudden strong gusts of wind just outside our flat. The Husband and I were both in the study, with the air con switched on, since it has been a awfully hot day. I heard some noise and thought that the rain had came in suddenly.

We both looked out and saw the trees swaying pretty violently, with their leaves dropping and flying all over the place. For a moment it all seemed a little disconcerting and I was a little worried something worse will happen, like a typhoon or something, thanks to my very wild imagination. The moment only lasted seconds, and the next thing I did was ordered The Husband excitedly to grab the video camera. We are not born documentarians, so we didn't get anything that will show how strong the wind was last night. That and the fact that we are really lousy with the camera. So excited to witness such strong winds, we stood at the window for quite a while. The leaves looked amazing under the lights of the lamp posts.

We went out this morning for breakfast and my, the roads were filled will fallen leaves and broken branches. Some RC banners were all over the place too. I don't remember the last time in Singapore that the wind was this strong.

I told The Husband with a little smile, "this is just like in New Zealand!"

Movies

I never fail to check out the movie titles when I go pass this Yang Tze cinema. Always crack me up. They are now showing Nipples! HAHAHAHAHA! Tell me that doesn't crack you up. They still draw and paint those posters. So retro! Nobody else does that anymore. Not bad leh, every time I go pass, every time different titles. Is it true that only ah peks watch these films? Is it true that they bring in umbrellas? Is it true that the seats are not too clean? Is it true that you can spot those ah peks doing naughty stuff? I am so curious, I may just drag the Husband with me just once!

Actually, I have snuck into this cinema once. It was for Philadelphia. Before they started showing all these sleazy movies. That was way back when I was still underage. I have snuck into Lido a few of times too. Still remember the films - Birdcage, Shawshank Redemption and An Interview with a Vampire. I might have watched Adventures of Priscilla - Queen of the Desert too. I knew I watched it, can't remember if I was under 21 though.

I must had looked old for my age. Sigh.

I went with a friend and we were giggling like crazy when we got in. We told ourselves that we need to act and behave 'mature'. We dressed 'mature' too. (Since then, I am still trying to be a mature person.) It was hilarious. When we were in the cinema, we commented that, hey, how come adults don't eat popcorn one ha? They are so quiet before the movie hor, never talk one? We felt that we stuck out like sore thumbs, and half the time, expecting someone to point us out as underage viewers and that we would be thrown out by the ushers. Thankfully, that never happened. After that, the checking became more strict and I never tried until I was of the legal age.
